Constantinos Levendis also known as “Gus” opened The William Penn in 1928. He immigrated from his home country of Greece. He grew-up in a village named Delvanaki. When he came to America he lived in New York city for a short time. Then he moved to Philadelphia for a year.
Then, he finally settled in a booming town called Lebanon. He opened the doors to The William Penn Restaurant And Bar in 1928. He ran the business for the next 30 years. Gus then passed the business down to his oldest son, George. George ran the business for the next 44 years with his wife Dolores. After Georges’ passing in July of 2002, his son Michael, became the next Levendis to be handed the business. Michael would be the third generation to own the very popular eatery and bar.
George Levendis graduated from Lebanon High in 1948 then Gettysburg College in 1952. He was a captain in the Army Infantry; discharged in 1967.
Michael Levendis currently runs the family business. He graduated from Cedar Crest High school in 1983 then Marymount University in 1996.
The restaurant menu consists of Greek chili dogs and chili hamburgers. The secret is in the family recipe sauce. First comes the hot dog nestled in the bun, then comes mustard, diced onions, and finally the special sauce. That completes a famous William Penn Chili Dog. We are one of the original Greek chili dog establishments left in the central Pennsylvania area.
